Many folks are concerned with what to write to their officials. They do not want to say the wrong thing or come across the wrong way. They also want to be heard, they want to express themselves and their beliefs in a reasonable manner. These are valid concerns, as no one listens to hasty advice, no one wants to come across as an idiot, and no one wants their ideas misrepresented by the opposition.

While the proposed laws may make your blood boil (and justifiably so), when you write letters, you need to let that emotion express itself in a positive form on paper. This is not to say you can't speak from the heart, or from experience, or statistics, or from an honest desire in seeing those you elected into office protect you and yours. You just need remember, they were presented with a problem, and they are seeking solutions. YOU are not necessarily the problem, and they KNOW this, but rather, how can you help address the issue at hand?

Sure, tell them about your loving pets, let them know your dogs are well taken care of and maintained, point out the statistics, show them the violations of their proposed laws, stand up for your rights, but ULTIMATELY let them know you want to HELP address the communities' concern. While we are Responsible Dog Owners, those who are not brought us all to this point of legislation.

Below are some sample letters you can cut/paste/send, although we recommend you review them and tweak them to your own circumstance. Just remember, when you propose "ideas" that "regulate", you are STILL "restricting" the rights of Responsible Dog Owners. While you may not agree with all your neighbor does, if his dogs are healthy, fed, and loved, than he too deserves his freedoms to choose how he maintains his pets.
